Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)

Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or the Mountain of 7 Colors, is located at about 5,200 meters (17,060 ft) above sea level in the Andes near Cusco.

  • Unique mineral formation: Its vivid colors (pink, white, red, green, brown, yellow) come from layers of clay, sandstone, and mineral oxides.
  • Access and trekking: Reached via Cusipata or Pitumarca routes, followed by a 2–3 hour hike (5–7 km) or horseback ride. The trail is moderately difficult and altitude sickness is common.
  • Extreme weather: Cold, windy, and unpredictable—acclimatization in Cusco is recommended. Dress in layers and bring sun protection.
  • Andean flora and fauna: Expect to see ichu grass, lichens, alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, and condors.
  • Tour services: Most tours include hotel pickup, guide, breakfast, lunch, hiking poles, entrance fees, and oxygen tanks.
